(Fountain Apple Moss)

Philonotis fontana belongs to the Family Bartramiaceae characterized by these strangely beautiful apple-like capsules, and which has representatives around the world. It is widespread in the marshy places of Ontario (Canada) but seldom has sporophytes here. This specimen was collected in British Columbia (Canada) where it is abundantly fruitful.
